Emotional and mental health and well-being of children and young people ‘national priority’

Responding to the publication of the Assembly report on emotional and mental health support for children and young people in Wales Llyr Gruffydd AM, Plaid Cymru shadow cabinet secretary for education and lifelong learning and a member of the Children, Young People and Education committee said,

“This is the latest in a long line of reports that highlight the poor availability of Mental Health services for children and young people.  Many of the findings highlighted were also made in the previous report published in 2014 by the last Assembly’s Children, Young People and Education Committee.

“It’s unacceptable that children and young people have to be seriously ill before they can access the mental health services they need. Too many are too often left without the vital support that would prevent their mental illness getting worse. This ‘missing middle’ cannot be neglected any longer. We also need substantially more investment in prevention and earlier intervention for those showing signs of emotional and mental health problems.  For those children and young people who do meet the criteria to access CAMHS services, it’s unacceptable that they will also encounter difficulties including long waiting times.

“Plaid Cymru believes that the emotional and mental health and well-being of children and young people must be a national priority. That’s why in our recent conference we announced that we would put extra resources into tackling this crisis and fine health boards who failed to ensure those extra resources led to an improved performance.”
