Responding to the UK Government’s confirmation that a million public sector workers are to receive their biggest pay rise in nearly 10 years, Llyr Gruffydd AM and Plaid Cymru shadow cabinet spokesperson for education and lifelong learning said:
“I welcome the long over-due pay rise for teachers and other public sector workers, many of whom have faced severe real-term cuts to their wages due to a decade of Tory austerity.
“However, we also need clarity from the UK Government about how this relaxation of the pay cap will be paid. If there is no additional funding coming from the Treasury then it will fall on schools to fund this pay rise from their existing budgets and that is completely unacceptable. We know many schools are on the brink in terms of their financial situation and will be unable to fund pay rises without shedding staff as a result.”
