Call for Government to invest in electric cars

Commenting on the news that only one of the Welsh Government’s fleet of cars was powered by electric, Llyr Gruffydd AM said:

“It really is a disgrace that 73 of the Welsh Government’s 77 official cars run on diesel – and just one is electric.

“Just seven weeks ago, the Senedd was the world’s first parliament to declare a climate emergency in a debate brought by Plaid Cymru, and the Welsh Government itself declared a climate emergency following pressure from Plaid Cymru and tireless climate campaigners.

“That’s why it’s particularly astonishing that almost 95% of the Welsh Government’s official cars run on diesel. The Welsh Government should practise what it preaches. It’s quite straightforward – the Welsh Government should act immediately to limit the environmental impact of its official fleet by drastically reducing the number of diesel vehicles it uses, investing instead in electric cars.

“At a time when our Senedd and the Welsh Government itself have recognised that we are facing a climate emergency, that really shouldn’t be too much to ask.”
